Bilingual Poetry Quilt

Based on the activity of writing found poetry, we created a poetry quilt. Each line was written on one piece of fabric and reorganized as a form of poetry on a background fabric. This act of arranging fabric pieces along with other visual symbols resembles the process of writing a poem, where a writer attentively arranges words and lines to create meanings. Similar to writing a poem, quilt-making requires many aesthetic decisions in terms of patterns, compositions, symbols, and meanings. This found poetry quilt demonstrates how the process of making a quilt, such as connecting pieces to create visual meanings, is similar to that of bilingual poetry writing. (The bilingual poems on quilts were written based on a chapter in La Casa en Mango Street and The House on Mango Street by Cisnero).
